“Akoumia is a traditional sweet of Symi. they make them and distribute them to each chapel when it celebrates its name. They consider it the candy of joy, so when there was a joyful event in the house they would typically say: “EE! akoume akoumia.”
They made them when the baby took off his first bite.
The Akoumia is also the Vasilopita of Symi. people put a coin in it and whoever finds it is the lucky guy of the year. Only on New Year’s Day do they put honey on top.”
